thiefIt is always a wonderful opportunity to review a book written by the team of Jefferson Bass because I know there will be a great read waiting for me. Their books have everything I could want in a book – suspense, a plot that just doesn’t quit and memorable characters.

In The Bone Thief, Dr. Bill Brockton has been called in to work on a case – one that would seem to be routine. The main purpose is to exhume the body and obtain DNA for a paternity test.

Dr. Brockton brings along Miranda, his graduate assistant . One of her duties is to run the Anthropology Department’s osteology laboratory (the bone lab). She also helps coordinate the body donation program.

Everything seems to be going according to plan until the coffin is opened. To everyone’s dismay, the body has missing limbs. How could this have happened?

It is soon discovered that someone is making a lot of money selling body parts on the black market. The FBI asks Brockton to assist them to help catch whomever is responsible for this terrible crime.

Dr. Garcia, the medical examiner and Brockton’s friend, has suffered a devastating injury. He pulled a piece of metal, the size of a ball bearing, from a dead man’s body. The metal was radioactive and the radiation caused severe injury to Dr. Garcia’s hands. Only the last two fingers remained on his right hand and his left hand had to be amputated just below the wrist. Could this destroy his career? Is there a way to help him with these injuries so he can continue with his career?

Is Dr. Brockton able to solve this case?

Dr. Bill Blass is a forensic anthropologist who founded the University of Tennessee’s Research Facility – the body farm. His real life experiences come through in his descriptive writing as he gives you all the details of what is going on in a lab. For instance, when an autopsy is being conducted, you will know exactly what is taking place. You will also learn many things you did not know pertaining to the forensics field. Jon Jefferson is a journalist, writer and documentary filmmaker. When you look at their experience, you can understand how the team of Jefferson Bass is able to create such thrilling stories.

I found The Bone Thief to be a compelling read. You could feel the suspense build with the turn of each page. You have several things going on at the same time. In addition to trying to solve the mystery, Dr. Brockton has to deal with the question of how far does one go to help a friend.

After reading The Bone Thief, you will want to go back and read the other books in this series if you have not already done so. The Bone Thief is a very satisfying read!
