Tess Gerritsen is certainly capable of taking readers on mind-boggling jaunts as she uses Detective Jane Rizzoli and Boston Medical Examiner Maura Isles as primary characters in another exciting mystery.

This one is really far reaching as it all begins with Isles away from Boston on a medical conference in Wyoming. As usual she is having man problems in her love life so this break might bring her around to what should she do with her secret love affair with a priest. Ice Cold by Tess GerritsenMost adults live fairly predictable lives. As a medical examiner, Maura Isles, is cautious. She is not a risk-taker. So while at a pathologists’ convention in Wyoming, she is offered the opportunity for an adventure from a former college classmate and fellow pathologist. Since her love life is not doubtful now, maybe this chance will change her life into something more meaningful. She agrees to a ski trip for the weekend.

When GPS gives directions, we tend to believe it is correct. As snow is falling and getting increasingly deeper, you definitely are hoping it is correct. However, when you are stuck in the snow, then you could care less about the GPS and just look for some place safe and out of the weather.

Maura, the other pathologist and his thirteen-year-old daughter, and another couple decide to leave the vehicle and hike to safety, trudging through the snow. They are relieved to come upon a small village of twelve identical houses. They enter one whose door was unlocked and are surprised to find the house is not equipped with the usual comforts of everyday life, such as electricity and central heat. Ice Cold by Tess GerritsenIce Cold begins with Maura Isles, Boston Medical Examiner, heading to Wyoming for a medical conference. Maura is disappointed in her romance with Daniel Brophy and thus decides to be impulsive and go on a ski trip with a colleague from the conference which is totally out of character for Maura. She takes off with Doug, his teenage daughter Grace, and his other two friends, Arlo and Elaine in a Suburban. Things start to go bad when the GPS sends them down an isolated road during a snowstorm.

When they have an accident and wind up in a ditch, they take shelter in a deserted village called Kingdom Come thirty miles from the nearest town. There are about twelve houses that appear to have been abandoned quickly with meals interrupted, cars in the garages, and pets left alone to die of apparent starvation. While trying to get back to civilization with one of the abandoned vehicles, they have another more serious accident and Maura has to head out on foot to try to get help. Read the rest of this entry »
