Still Midnight by Denise Mina

midnightReviewed by Nancy Eaton

It all starts with a botched home invasion. Two men break into a home and make a demand to produce a man who does not exist in this house. In all the confusion, one person in the house is shot and an elderly man is kidnapped with the two men demanding a high ransom. What has gone wrong? Did they have the wrong house?

Detective Alex Morrow is called to investigate and what a case this is for anyone who might want to rise in the ranks. Detective Morrow has some issues to deal with also. One is her half brother who is involved in just the opposite of law and order and is working in the criminal underworld of Glasgow.

Detective Morrow was raised by a single mother and has many flaws of her own like a bad temper. She gets annoyed when she is not “in charge” of a case and as is the case with this one, has to report to Detective Sgt. Bannerman. She sets out to investigate on her own due to the fact that this is her “territory” and she is familiar with many of the “bad boys” in the neighborhood.

Is Detective Morrow able to solve this case?

What makes Still Midnight a great read is the characters. First, we have the two who committed the home invasion. They had everything so messed up it almost makes you laugh. Then we have the complicated character Detective Morrow who has many issues going on in her private life while trying to do her job at the same time. Still Midnight is character driven, the plot is engrossing with many twists and turns and there is an ending that will surprise you! All this adds up to one good read! Denise Mina fans will enjoy the latest by this author.
